What Happens When God Doesn’t Make Sense
Lessons from Genesis 27
There are moments when life feels confusing, unfair, and completely out of order. We pray, try to trust God, and yet circumstances seem to suggest that nothing is unfolding the way it should. Genesis 27 brings us into one of those deeply complicated moments—a family divided by deception, favoritism, fear, and uncertainty.
Isaac intended to bless Esau, his older son. Rebekah, remembering God’s earlier promise that the older would serve the younger, helped Jacob receive the blessing instead. Jacob deceived his father, Esau was devastated, and the family’s relationships were fractured. Nothing about the situation appears simple or commendable, yet God’s purposes continued to unfold even through human weakness and brokenness.
God Is Still Working in the Confusion
Genesis 27 reminds us that God’s work is not limited by our imperfect choices. That does not mean deception, manipulation, or favoritism are unimportant. They cause real pain and carry serious consequences. But the chapter also shows that human failure cannot cancel God’s promises.
When we cannot understand what God is doing, we may assume He has lost control. Yet faith often means trusting God’s character before we can see His plan. We may not have answers for every disappointment, delay, or difficult circumstance, but we can continue to believe that God remains present and faithful.
Confusion Does Not Mean Abandonment
Jacob’s actions led to fear and separation. Esau’s anger grew, and Rebekah sent Jacob away to protect him. The family faced consequences that would shape their lives for years. Still, Jacob’s journey did not place him beyond God’s reach.
Sometimes a confusing season feels like evidence that God has left us. But Scripture repeatedly shows that God meets people in the wilderness, in uncertainty, and in the aftermath of their mistakes. Even when we are unsure of the next step, God is not absent from the journey.
We Can Bring Our Honest Questions to God
Genesis 27 does not give us a polished picture of faith. It gives us people acting out of fear, ambition, preference, and pain. That honesty encourages us to come before God without pretending that everything makes sense.
We can ask difficult questions. We can grieve what has been lost. We can acknowledge our own failures and the harm caused by others. Honest faith is not the absence of questions; it is the decision to bring those questions to God rather than turn away from Him.
Trusting God Beyond What We Can See
When God does not make sense, we are invited to trust not in our ability to predict the future, but in the One who holds it. Genesis 27 challenges us to remember that God’s purposes are greater than the confusion of the moment. He can work through complicated circumstances, redeem what has been broken, and guide us even when the path ahead is unclear.
If you are facing a season that feels unfair or uncertain, do not assume that God is finished. Continue to seek Him, walk honestly, and take the next faithful step. The story is not over simply because you cannot yet see how the pieces fit together.
Reflection
Where does life feel confusing or unfair right now?
What questions do you need to bring honestly before God?
What is one faithful step you can take today, even without having all the answers?
Prayer: God, when Your ways are difficult to understand, help us trust Your character. Give us courage to face our questions, humility to recognize our failures, and faith to believe that You are still working. Lead us in the next step and remind us that we are never beyond Your presence. In Jesus Precious and Holy Name, Amen.
